As technology companies worldwide struggle to narrow the yawning gender parity gap, organizations in other industries ranging from insurance and food services to banking have emerged as guiding lights for how to boost the number of women in the workplace. MetLife, the 48,employee insurance giant, is among the standouts. The program bore fruit, expanding the representation of female managers and entry-level workers to 50 percent. The three major strategy houses are trying to increase the percentage of women in their ranks but are finding that getting results at the highest level is slow-going. Based on personnel figures as of March 31, , the data also shows that at the professional level, the percentage of full-time permanent women at about 40 per cent in all three firms.
The challenges faced by the strategy houses are similar to that of accounting and law firms , which have also found it a hard slog to improve the level of female leadership. This comes as BHP announced a plan to have a 50 per cent female global workforce by , with the mining giant's minerals boss Mike Henry saying " if we don't make a bold declaration we will consign ourselves to incremental gains that are not much better than the status quo ".
The Boston Consulting Group currently has 30 partners of which five, or 20 per cent, are women, said Andrew Clark, the firm's Australia and New Zealand managing partner. But he also cautioned that the nature of the work — where travel can be required and hours can vary dramatically — meant that the consultants needed to have sufficient support at home.
The Australia and New Zealand managing partner for Bain, David Zehner, said the firm was "committed to being a great place to work and creating a supportive culture for all of our people.
McKinsey Australia partner Emma Petherick says she is encouraged by the number of women coming through the company. Mr Zehner pointed to a list of initiatives to support women at the firm including flexible working programs and a Women at Bain group.
The firm also partners on a pro-bono basis with Chief Executive Women on research about gender parity in Australia. Mr Zehner said Bain had short- and long-term goals but that it viewed the "percentage of women" number as only one of many indicators. Bain declined to reveal the current number of partners nor the number of female partners at the firm. McKinsey Australia partner Emma Petherick said her firm was encouraged by the number of women coming through the company.

Announced on October 15, the Women in the Workplace study is one of the largest comprehensive studies of the state of women in corporate America. Org Women in the Workplace research. Through a joint effort with McKinsey, Wnet invited members across payments companies to participate in the annual study. No one knows for sure who will be among the final contenders for the position to be vacated by Dominic Barton next June. But six unnamed company insiders and former partners who spoke to the FT identified the people believed to be frontrunner candidates: Vivian Hunt, managing partner of the UK and Ireland; Gary Pinkus, managing partner for North America; Kevin Sneader, Asia-Pacific chairman; and Bob Sternfels, head of global functions. Observant readers will notice that everyone on the list is a McKinsey insider and only one—Hunt—is a woman. The research, which measured the performance of companies in Canada, the US, the UK, and Latin America, across industry sectors, also uncovered a no-diversity penalty: Not only were those corporations with less diverse leadership not ahead in their market segment, they were falling behind the average performers in their group.
